This month, we’re proud to share with you the story of Dr. Olu Oyegunwa and his practice, Fayetteville Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.

We’re going to show you how they came to be one of our most successful clients and continue to see consistent new patient growth at their Fayetteville, NC dental practice.

Fayetteville Family & Cosmetic Dentistry became a Firegang client in August of 2016 and, what brought them to us was a feeling that their current marketing was missing the mark.

Dr. Oyegunwa wasn’t seeing the results he wanted and was ready to make a change. He realized that staying with his current marketing company, even though they were the comfortable known option, wasn’t going to get him the patients he needed.

He was unhappy with the number of patients he was seeing and the overall staff morale in his office was poor because of it. He had a choice to make about his marketing company.

We often hear about a fear of change from many of the dentists we work with. Deciding to make a change to a new marketing company can be daunting. Most dentists out there have been burned by a marketing company once or twice and don’t want to risk spending more money on marketing that doesn’t work.

However, continuing to pour money into a website or old marketing plan that hasn’t been getting you the new patients you need isn’t the answer either.

Dr. Oyegunwa realized it was a change in his overall mindset about marketing.

“Think of it like opening up a new location, that’s a big investment, but you do it because you can see the potential payoff for your dental practice. Advertising is the same thing. It’s an investment that you have to make because you know it’ll be beneficial to the future of your business.”

I was on the fence initially, I was thinking it was a big monthly investment, but I decided I was willing to make it because I could see the potential value and that monthly investment pays for itself over and over each month.”

Success By The Numbers

  • 2016 = Average of 142 new patients per month
  • 2017 = Average of 228 new patients per month
  • First Quarter of 2018 = Already on track to exceed 2017’s average at 275 new patients per month!

The most recent change our team suggested was an update to his practice’s website, as it hadn’t been re-designed since it launched in 2016. Dr. Oyegunwa agreed the site needed a refresh to continue to attract the types of quality new patients he wanted and worked closely with our web design team throughout the process.

The new site launched in March of 2018 and the practice’s number of new patient appointments reflects how well it is converting visitors to new patient appointments.

Q & A With Dr. Olu Oyegunwa, Owner Of Fayetteville Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

Where was Fayetteville Family & Cosmetic Dentistry before Firegang?

The practice has been established since the 1960s. We have an extensive patient base, with some patients who have been seen here for decades.

We’ve gone through multiple ownerships over the years and I took over ownership in 2014. We’re a general office, we do basically everything, including dental implants, cosmetic dentistry and everything else.

Before Firegang, we were slow. Even given the fact that we had been established for so long, things were still slow. And it didn’t help that when I took over I extended the hours, so we had a lot more chairs we had to fill and were in need of a lot of new patients.

There were a lot of openings on the schedule and I was unhappy, the staff was unhappy.

What drove you to look for a new marketing company?

I had a company that was managing our SEO at the time and they were doing yellow pages ads. We had them look into managing our website and do some digital advertising. But I always felt like something was missing.

It just wasn’t as good as it needed to be, especially considering the amount of money I was investing into SEO campaigns. That’s when I began looking for another marketing company and I saw a podcast with Howard Farran with the two owners of Firegang on Dentaltown.

Because of that and all the comments on Dentaltown, I decided to call and see what you could do for me.

Flash forward to today, what is your dental practice like?

Sometimes we are overwhelmed! We are getting so many phone calls, even the staff will start to complain about how many. There was a point where we couldn’t even get a new patient in until 2 months out, we were so busy.

It has definitely been a big change, a complete 180 and we’ve seen a lot of success. New patient flow has more than doubled since we joined Firegang, which is something I’m excited about.

Right now we have 2 full time dentists, me and an associate and are looking to expand by adding another associate in the next few months.

How has working with Firegang compared to other companies you’ve worked with in the past?

I feel like the search engine optimization (SEO) has been effective. I can see our website moving up on Google rankings, which is always nice to see. I love the way the search engine marketing was better managed than the company we used to use.

We see better advertising with Google AdWords and just having our account much better managed with Firegang. Having someone who manages you as a client, our CSM, Jenna, that you can talk to, she is someone that’s going to help to take care of whatever you need.

That’s always been something that’s been beneficial, that open communication. We can talk regularly about what goes well, what’s not going well, what we need to change. It’s been awesome - Jenna is top notch!

What’s something you were surprised by once you started working with Firegang?

A lot of the results that happened excited me. The SEO was amazing, it happened a lot faster than I was expecting. I thought it would take 6-12 months before we saw the new patient numbers go up, but it was much faster than that.

What do you feel has been the #1 factor to your success?

There’s not just one factor, but if I had to pick one I’d say it’s just being a lot more consistent with our SEO and search engine marketing, staying on top of that and not giving up on it too soon. I think that has definitely been a big component.

Using Facebook Ads would be another factor and we’ve had a lot of success with that.

What would you say to a dentist that has hopped around to a bunch of other marketing companies trying to find what works?

You know, anything with internet marketing can take time, so that’s something you just have to do - give it time. There’s a lot of competition out there and a lot of dentists are trying to be #1 on Google.

I don’t know what Firegang does but they do it well! Give the marketing some time and it’ll get up there - you will see the SEO rankings for your dental practice go up, don’t give up too soon and it’ll pay out.

Do you feel like you get a lot of transparency from Firegang?

Absolutely, there are a lot of analytics, a lot of data that you guys share with your clients, with us. It’s an open book - you can see exactly what you guys are doing on a monthly basis. It’s nice to have access to that.

How do you feel about patient quality you get from from the internet?

We definitely get good quality patients. We get a lot of phone calls from our ads for consults for implants, etc. and those turn into patients signing up for a big case.

We see high quality leads from internet and our website with cosmetic patients too. Veneers, 6 Month Smiles, Invisalign, we see a lot of those.

The schedule is packed and almost anytime we ask a patient they say they heard about us online. I would say 8 out of 10 times they say they found us because of the internet.

What advice would you give a practice that is just starting out with a new marketing strategy?

The best place to invest initially is online - make sure you have a good website! I definitely love the websites that Firegang builds, they have a lot of what they call “conversion elements”, that make it easy for patients to click and schedule an appointment.

We have so many of those on our website to help patients engage with us and it is very beneficial.

Also focus on social media. Facebook is a big deal and a lot of offices have seen a lot of success based on Facebook marketing and I think new offices need to put a lot of energy into that to make sure people know about them on social media.

Make sure that you focus on your SEO, even though it’s going to take time, especially if you’re a new practice, but if you’re patient you’re going to see the payoff.

What would you say to a practice on the fence about investing in marketing?

Exactly what you said - It’s an investment. It’s not something I would consider an expense because you’re going to get your money back times 5 or times 10.

Put money in, invest that money and it’s going to pay off, you’re going to see the payout easily.

I was kind of in the same thinking initially, I was thinking it was a big monthly investment, but I was willing to make it because i could see the potential value and that monthly investment pays for itself over and over each month.
