We Love Our Hometown Spokane – Here’s a Quick History
Spokane’s first settlers were a tribe of Native American’s called the “Spokanes” which means “Children of the Sun.”. It is from this, the city was named. On Nov. 29, 1881, Spokane became an incorporated City which encompasses 1.56 square miles. During that time, the City was known as Spokan Falls with a population of 350. In 1883, and “Falls” was dropped and in 1891 an “e” was added in. In 1889 Spokane suffered a raging fire that destroyed 32 blocks in downtown Spokane.
A new City Hall was built in 1913, serving as the City’s main office until the year of 1981. The 1920s-era Montgomery Wards building located at Spokane Falls Boulevard and Post Street, was redesigned then to become the City’s offices. Currently the Old City Hall is now home to shops and restaurants.
The City of Spokane planted its roots more than 126 years ago; where it is now rated as the second largest City in the State of Washington.
